In 1990 and 1991 the NMNH repatriated all of the human remains of Native Hawaiians, approximately 190 individuals. Discussions regarding the return of Native Hawaiian remains began in 1989, prior to the passage of the NMAI Act, and continued through arrangements for two separate repatriations.
