AL333-45
To
the right is the fossil specimen AL 333-45 from the site of Hadar, Ethiopia.
This fossil was one of several different specimens used to make a composite
reconstruction of the skull of Australopithecus afarensis. The occipital
area, or the back of the skull, is preserved in this specimen. At the
center-bottom of the image you can see the auditory canal, which leads
to the eardrum and inner parts of the ear. The fossil is oriented similarly
to the composite skull on the previous page, and so the back of the
skull is to the right.
