Warren Sharp is a geochronologist at the Berkeley Geochronology Center (BGC) in Berkeley, California. Along with Ken Ludwig (also at BGC), he's working on developing uranium-series dating to help refine the temporal framework at Olorgesailie and in other terrestrial sequences. U-series dating can be applied to materials such as silicified plant stems and roots, soil carbonate, and tufa, complementing the range of materials datable by more widely applied methods such as Ar-Ar dating.
Warren received his Ph.D. from U.C. Berkeley, working on problems of continental accretion in the western United States. He joined the geology faculty at S.U.N.Y. Stony Brook, where he taught, continued research in tectonics, and established a program in Ar-Ar dating. He joined BGC in 1993.
Currently, Warren divides his time between U-series dating and Ar-Ar dating of hot spot related volcanism, especially the Hawaiian-Emperor Bend and Quaternary eruptive centers of the island of Hawaii.
