The crew clears site A11-10.

Pick and shovel work to remove the natural strata above the sand layer at this site, and also last year's backfill, which was thrown, inconveniently, right where we want to dig this year.

Dr. Rick Potts is kneeling with his back to the camera, collecting a fossil pig's tooth from the surface. The tooth actually should have been discovered last year, as it was in the pile of dirt that was thrown on the top of the hill in excavating the original trench. Careful work helped right this mistake.

Extending the trench at Site 15. The elephant was originally found in the area on the right side of the photograph, just behind John Kioko, bending over in the green shirt. The fragments of the 4238 vertebra and 4237 phalanx were found near where the two crew members in the trench are bending over.

Close window to return to dispatch.
