Olorgesailie, forty kilometers to the northeast of Lainyamok,
is the site of another ancient lake. An ongoing large-scale project has
been underway at Olorgesailie since 1985, attempting to answer the question
posed at Lainyamok, "What are the interrelations between human and environment,
and how did the latter influence the evolution of the former?"
Visible in the terrain are the horizontal layers of sediment that were deposited on the floor of the now gone lake. One layer of interest is from a brief period when the lake was dry, dating to 990,000 years ago. That layer is yielding fossils of the animals that inhabited the basin, and stone tools left there by early human inhabitants. |
