Order Photographs of Artifacts
Professional publication-quality prints or high resolution digital images of artifacts in our collections are available from Smithsonian Institution Archives Photographic Services (SPS).
To order photos, start by sending us a list of specific artifacts of interest to you. If possible, provide their catalog numbers. If the artifacts have already been photographed, we will provide the negative numbers you will need to order images from SPS.
Note that SPS staff cannot process image requests using a list of artifact catalog numbers; they need the photo negative numbers.
If you already know the negative numbers, you can submit your request directly to SPS:

If digital artifact images are credited to Donald Hurlbert and/or National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) Imaging, they can be ordered directly from NMNH Imaging. Email NMNH Imaging for current prices and ordering procedures.
If there are no photographs on file, and/or original photography is required, we will let you know whether the artifact is available to be photographed and the procedures involved. Please contact Felicia Pickering for additional information.
Photo Permissions
If you plan to include these images in a publication, please read Anthropology's Guidelines for Photographic Use Fees and submit a Permission Request Form directly to us. Please be sure to include a daytime phone number and email address with your request:
