Order Photographs of Artifacts
High resolution digital images of some artifacts in our collections are available from either Smithsonian Institution Archives (SIA) Photographic Services, or National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) Imaging.
If images are credited to James Di Loreto, Donald Hurlbert and/or National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) Imaging, they can be ordered directly from NMNH Imaging. Email NMNH Imaging for current prices and ordering procedures.
Otherwise, start by sending us a list of specific artifacts of interest to you, including their catalog numbers. If photographs are available, we will provide the negative numbers you will need to order images from Photographic Services.
Once you know the negative numbers, you can submit your request to SIA:
If there are no photographs on file, and/or original photography is required, we will let you know whether the artifact is available to be photographed and the procedures involved.
If you plan to include Smithsonian or NMNH-provided images in a publication, please read Anthropology's Guidelines for Photographic Use Fees and submit a Permission Request Form directly to us. Be sure to include a daytime phone number and email address with your request:
For historic photographs on anthropological subjects, including many images from old Bureau of American Ethnology publications, see the National Anthropological Archives.
