The Human Origins Program: Public Outreach
As a compliment to its research, the Human Origins Program maintains an active
educational profile. One focus of our educational efforts is the development of
exhibitions, both at the Smithsonian in Washington
DC, and in Kenya, in conjunction with the National
Museums of Kenya. One result of this collaboration is the Olorgesailie Site Museum.
Above Left: The famous paleoanthropologist Mary Leakey, discoverer
of the "Zinj" skull and the Laetoli footprints, stands with Human Origins Program Director Rick Potts, Thalassa
Skinner and Joseph Mureithi, discussing the geology display at the Site Museum during construction.
Above Right: A catwalk allows visitors to the
site to view an amazing accumulation of Achulean stone tools and fossil bones at Olorgesailie without disturbing their position. Visitors to the site museum today can witness these tools made by our early human ancestors as they were discovered.
